Meetup-FAQ

1) Before the Meetup

Get a quick overview of what to expect before joining your first gathering — so you can feel relaxed, prepared, and confident walking in.

What kind of people show up?

A mixed crowd: newcomers, long-term Berliners, students, professionals, introverts, extroverts — ages usually range from early 20s to mid 40s (sometimes even 50s). Group composition varies from event to event, but the atmosphere is always friendly, respectful, and open-minded. Everyone is welcome.

How do I find the group at the meeting point?

The event description includes a clear location. For social meetups you can join anytime; for walking meetups it’s important to arrive on time before the group starts moving.

Can I come alone? Can I bring a friend?

Yes to both. Most people come alone and it’s completely normal at our gatherings — but you’re just as welcome to bring someone along.

What if I feel nervous before my first meetup?

That’s completely normal. Just come as you are — most people relax quickly once they arrive and realize everyone’s here to connect.

2) During the Meetup

Here’s what our gatherings feel like once you arrive — relaxed, friendly, and open enough for conversations to unfold naturally.

How do social meetups work?

They take place in bars, cafés, parks, or other relaxed locations. People join at their own pace, conversations form naturally, and small groups shift throughout the evening. You can talk, listen, wander, or simply take it all in.

Do I have to introduce myself to the whole group?

No. There are no forced introductions. You join conversations when you’re ready, and people will include you naturally.

How do walking meetups work?

These involve exploring a part of Berlin, visiting a festival, or walking to see something interesting. The group moves together, which makes conversations flow easily. Being on time is important so you don’t miss the start.

Is it weird to join a conversation that already started?

Not at all. Conversations shift constantly — people come and go, groups mix, and jumping in mid-flow is completely normal.

Can I leave whenever I want?

Yes. Stay 20 minutes or stay for hours — whatever feels right. Leaving quietly is completely okay; no announcements needed.

What if I’m shy or don’t know how to start?

Totally fine. Many people feel that way. You can start by listening, join a smaller group, or wait until someone talks to you. There is zero pressure to be “on.”

3) Safety, Inclusion & Respect

We want everyone to feel welcome, safe, and respected at our gatherings.
Here’s how we create a positive atmosphere for everyone.

What’s your policy on respectful behavior?

We keep things friendly, open-minded, and respectful.
No pressure, no pushiness, no weird behavior — everyone should feel comfortable and at ease.

Is it okay to take photos?

Please ask beforehand! We usually prefer to not take photos unless clearly communicated: What happens at the meetup stays at the meetup 😉

In which language do you run your meetups?

Mostly English, simply because it’s the common language in our community.
German, Spanish, Turkish or Hindi are of course welcome too — conversations naturally switch depending on who’s talking.

What if someone makes me uncomfortable?

Please don’t stay quiet. You can always talk to the hosts in private. We’ll listen, make sure you feel safe, and create distance if needed. If someone repeatedly crosses boundaries, we’ll step in and ask them to leave. Your comfort comes first.

4) Costs, Membership and Support

Our meetups are donation-based. Supporting the Social Butterfly Club is always optional — but it helps keep the community alive and growing.

Do your meetups cost anything?

Our meetups are open to everyone. We encourage a voluntary contribution to support the community and help keep the Club running.
Food, drinks, and any tickets for concerts, museums, or public transport are not included and need to be covered by each participant.

How do I sign up for events?

All our events are listed on our Meetup page — simply click “Attend” on the event page to sign up and don’t forget to actually show up in person. If plans change, please update your RSVP so others can join.

What does the Social Butterfly Club offer?

The Social Butterfly Club lives in three places that flow into each other.
On Meetup, we host our gatherings — walks, explorations, and social nights across Berlin — where conversations start in real life.
Our Telegram chat keeps the thread alive between those moments, a simple place to say hi, ask questions, or spin up a spontaneous plan.
And through Substack, our curated newsletter, we share handpicked events and gentle updates so you always know what’s worth stepping out for.

Together, these three strands weave the fabric of the Club: we meet, we stay in touch, and we keep each other in the loop — one small, human moment at a time. 🦋

How can I support the Club on an ongoing basis?

Our monthly Steady membership is a voluntary way to support the Social Butterfly Club.
It helps cover organizing time, tools, hosting, and the ongoing behind-the-scenes work that keeps the community running.

Right now, it’s mainly about support (we’ll add more benefits over time).
It’s optional, 14,95 € / month, and cancellable anytime.
